Best Kitchen Flooring

Written by Post on Monday, December 28th, 2009 in Home Improvement.

The kitchen can be a challenging area to provide flooring for.  On one hand, the kitchen flooring must be comfortable enough to stand on for long durations.  On the other hand, however, the flooring must keep out water and food to maintain its appearance.  The right kitchen flooring requires little maintenance and can keep up with the demands placed on it by a modern kitchen.  Spills and accidents will inevitably happen on a fairly frequent basis, putting a strain on any flooring that is installed in the kitchen area.  To prevent serious upkeep issues and future expenses, it pays to do the research necessary to find the best flooring.

Wood flooring has long been used in the kitchen, but it can lead to high maintenance costs.  Wood aborbs moisture, causing severe maintenance issues.  When a wood floor absorbs too much moisture it can begin to bow up or down in the middle, producing an unsightly and uneven surface.  The only way to fix this problem is to sand it down, or to go the expensive route and replace the floor.  Neither of these are very attractive options, and involve many hours as well as thousands of dollars.  While a properly finished and maintained wood floor may not be as susceptible to these issues, wood flooring is certainly more prone to suffer from them.

More reliable options include slate and ceramic tile.  Tile and slate do not absorb moisture, and do not suffer from warping or cracking.  As fairly rigid materials, they experience little expansion or contraction.
Slate and ceramic flooring are available in a broad range of colors and shades.  Slate and ceramic flooring are very resistant to slipping, making them a better surface to use in the kitchen as well.  Hardwood flooring may be hazardous when wet, especially if it has been exposed to moisture.  When using slate as a kitchen surface, purchase a product with a low gloss to keep the safety of its great traction.

Laminate flooring is a great alternative to both wood and slate.  To achieve that hardwood look without the maintenance issues, laminate flooring can be a great option.  Laminate flooring is easy to install, affordable, and very resistant to both water damage and stains.
Laminate flooring is also designed to withstand a great deal of foot traffic and pressure.  The kitchen is a demanding place for flooring, and should be given flooring that will withstand as much.  Choosing the right kind of flooring will give homeowners lasting durability, with low maintenance requirements.

Top Ikea Kitchen Planning Errors

Written by Post on Sunday, December 27th, 2009 in Home Improvement.

Ikea Kitchen Planner Software

As the old saying goes… If you are planning to fail, you must have failed to plan. That statement couldn’t be more true than when you’re undertaking an Ikea kitchen remodeling project.

You will definitely fail if you do not pay great attention to detail on the planning of your project from the very beginning. There is no other way. It is highly critical that you start your project on a good note, with that said be sure to take all the time you need to be positive that your kitchen design is correct!

The starting point when you are prepared to start your planning should weigh heavy on the overall kitchen design, the Ikea Kitchen Planner Software is that starting point.

If you haven’t done so already, go to Ikea and download the Ikea Kitchen Planner Software here:

Ikea Kitchen Planner Software

When you get the Ikea Kitchen Planner, install it on your computer and play around with it for a couple of days and do some rough schematic designs.

Once you get to a point where you are fairly comfortable with the software and you have a tape measure, it is time to go to the kitchen and get some fairly accurate measurements. Measuring the kitchen yourself, if you do not feel good about taking the measurements what you can do is hire a professional to come out and do it for you, or go get one of your family members or a neighbor that might be available.

When you get your measurements done, it’s time to do your first design on the planner software.

Start off by creating a new project in the Ikea Kitchen Planner Software and input your kitchen dimensions and finalize your room layout.

Once you believe you have your room layout correct, the next thing we want to do place the cabinets into your new room using the software.

When you start to place the cabinets with the planning software, make very sure that you give all the required information and clear specifications on things like door styles, finishes and such so your quote and
parts list is correct when you’re done and ready to print***

When you finish your initial design, take a couple of days off and then revisit your design to see if it will work.

If you are just not quite happy with your initial design, save it and try doing it one more time. In some cases you might choose to totally change your layout to something completely different than what you started with. I did the same thing when i did my kitchen design. I ended up doing 3-4 designs and picked the best one of the group for my final plan.

Ok now that you have your initial Ikea Kitchen Plan complete, it is time to get down to some research, you will have to do a lot of research on things such as appliances, flooring materials, cabinets and counter tops.

Become Healthy with Finnish Traditional Saunas

Written by Post on Monday, December 21st, 2009 in Home Improvement.

Saunas and steam baths originated in Finland. The traditional Finnish sauna is a very important part of their way of life. Saunas are not a luxury for the Finns, it is something they use everyday.

The sauna culture in Finland is almost well established. You will find built-in-sauna in almost every residence in Finland. The sauna has now been adopted in every corner of the world.

People’s perception of saunas, its customs, and etiquettes vary immensely from country to country. In recent times saunas have become very popular because of the advantages they offer. It’s well known that saunas are relaxing and can reduce stress, but they also provide some health benefits.

A traditional Finnish sauna offers a thorough cleansing of the body. Some people consider it the best natural skin treatment. It not only cleanses but also rejuvenates your skin from the inside out. Furthermore, Finnish sauna is a good work-out for your cardiovascular system. It is an immune system booster and provides gentle refreshment for the mind.

Basically, the traditional Finnish dry sauna is a hot air bath in warm and very low humid condition. So steam bathers sweat a lot. Therefore, new comers will atleast take 2 – 6 weeks time to get adopted. This sweating will actually help you become habituated to the hot and dry environment of the traditional Finnish dry sauna.

In a sauna the lighting is shady and the people usually prefer to sit in the sauna in silence and relaxed mood. A sauna’s temperature is usually kept between 80 and 110 degrees Celsius.

Furthermore, it is a common practice among sauna bathers to make a vihta, which means that they bind together fresh birch branches with leaves and belt themselves and their fellow sauna bathers with it. It is believed that usage of vihta improves blood circulation and also it has pleasing birch odour which helps in relaxation.

Unfortunately, using a sauna is not for everybody. The hot air temperature in a sauna does lead to an increase in cardiovascular activity.Hence it is not prescribed for people suffering from heart and cardiovascular disorders.

In addition, it is advisable for the people with high blood pressure to consult their doctor before they decide to take the dry sauna bath. A hot dry sauna should also not be used by the elderly, pregnant women, and children.

You have to be careful if you have been working out; your body must be cool before it is exposed to the hot temperature of the sauna bath. As long as you have taken these precautions under consideration and you are healthy enough, you should feel free to try a relaxing sauna bath.

The benefits of the traditional Finnish home sauna are proven – both physically and emotionally. Taking a hot sauna bath with not only leave you feeling better, it will leave you looking better as well. You will find that your body works more efficiently and, maybe more importantly, a hot sauna will make you feel more relaxed and mentally at ease.
