How To Store Wine In A Compact Wine Refrigerator

Written by Post on Saturday, February 27th, 2010 in Food & Drink.

Whether your an passionate wine collector or just like to have a few bottles available for a party, a compact wine refrigerator is an ideal way to store your wine. With capacities ranging from eight bottles up to 800 bottles, a wine refrigerator can be located on or under a kitchen cabinet or or be placed against a wall as a piece of furniture. Dual zone wine refrigerators are readily available and these can store different styles of wines at different temperatures for long-term aging or drinking.

For the many people who do not have the space to build a mini wine cellar, a compact wine refrigerator can provide an ideal solution. A compact under-bench wine refrigerator will maintain wines at the ideal temperature and it should be remembered that even those wines that are best served at room temperature should be stored in a cool environment to protect the integrity of the wine.

The advantage of a dual zone wine refrigerator is its ability to store different types of wines in the same unit. The recommended storage temperature for white wines is between 46 and 54 degrees Farenheit and for red wines it is 54 to 64 degrees Farenheit. Besides providing temperature control, a compact wine refrigerator will maintain the correct humidity for storing wine.

How To Store Wine Correctly

All wine lovers understand that they must look after their wines and treat them with respect; this includes avoiding any vibration of the bottles, to protect the wine. Any good quality wine refrigerator should be free from vibration and some of the better wine refrigerators are now beginning to use LED lighting in the interior to further protect the wine from deterioration.

Even low wattage bulbs can increase the temperature in an enclosed space like a compact wine refrigerator. Wines should ideally be stored in darkness, so the use of LED lights that do not emit any appreciable heat will assist in creating a better environment. Regardless of the type of lights you have, you should only open the wine refrigerator when necessary.

Most compact wine refrigerators have metal or glass racks and will store the bottles at a slight angle to ensure the corks stay moist by remaining in contact with the wine at all times. Regardless of the space available for a wine refrigerator, tall, slender units that can hold up to a dozen bottles or larger furniture-sized units with a capacity of many hundreds of bottles can protect the wines from environmental hazards that can alter their taste, hasten their aging and reduce their overall appeal.

At his wine blog – ChrisOnWine – Chris Miley occasionally mentions wine refrigerators amongst many other wine topics.

Green Tea Health Benefits

Written by Post on Friday, February 12th, 2010 in Food & Drink.

Drinking green tea made several discoveries regarding health benefits. Aside from green tea becoming an antioxidant, it is also claimed that it can help with cancer prevention, heart protection, arthritis prevention and liver protection. According to legends, tea was discovered by a Chinese emperor about 5,000 years ago. This Chinese emperor was boiling water to the belief that it can become more potable and safer to drink. When suddenly a large gust of wind took over and blew the leaves into the water that’s boiling. By the combination of water and leaves, a brown mixture was fashioned. Reluctantly, the emperor discovered the mixture making a very fragrant aroma. The moment he tasted it, he described it to be agreeable. From that moment on, green tea was born. No matter how accurate this legend is, what’s important is that green tea have become one of the most popular drink in China.)

(More recently, the health benefits of green tea have been established by studies done by medical professionals and companies who produce green tea products. These studies do show that the health benefits of green tea can add to the longevity of those who drink this product.

There is some evidence discovered in research studies that show that one of the health benefits of green tea is a reduced incidence of esophageal cancer for green tea drinkers. The reduction in the risk of developing this type of cancer is significant for those who drink green tea. There is other evidence that the health benefits of green tea is a reduced risk of developing other types of cancers for those who drink green tea on a regular basis.

Some say it’s impossible for green tea to affect bone diseases but the tea have proved them wrong because reports have it that green tea can prevent arthritis. Not only can green tea prevent arthritis from occurring but also eliminate the painful symptoms being contributed by the problem too. According to research on the
health benefits of green tea
, it has a component that has the ability to reduce inflammation. Research also suggests that antioxidants have the capacity to delay any arthritic process that might occur and minimizing irritable symptoms as well.

Because liver is another agent responsible for metabolism, it is greatly affected by green tea. There is strong correlation of bonds between liver function and antioxidants. When the liver does it job, it filters the body from toxins and washes it away through excretion.

Toxins are referred to harmful substances that we gather through daily living like digested food, breathed air, consumed water, alcohol intake and even remnants of cigarette smoking. What green tea provides the body is stimulating and strengthening the immune system making the liver more capable of filtering every single substance that can be dangerous to the body.

How To Build A Wine Closet

Written by Post on Tuesday, December 15th, 2009 in Food & Drink.

People who are passionate about wine usually start to collect it and as the wine collection grows you begin looking for a place to store your wine collection.

A cupboard can readily be converted into a mini wine cellar to store a growing wine collection.

However, before you start building your mini wine closet consider the position of the closet in relation to the rest of the house.

Avoid converting a closet located against an outside wall into a wine cellar. From season to season the other walls of your home may be subject to wide temperature fluctuations. Ideally, choose an internal closet where your wine will be able to be stored at a more constant temperature.

The degree and the speed of any change in temperature are critical elements in successfully storing and aging wine. A gradual change of a few degrees between from winter to summer won’t matter. A similar change each day will harm your wines by ageing them too rapidly.

The most important rule when you are storing your wine is to avoid large temperature fluctuations. Damage of this type will be evident immediately from the stickiness that often forms around the capsule. Over time, the continued expansion then contraction of the wine will damage the integrity of the cork. It’s just like having the cork pulled and replaced every day. When this occurs, tiny quantities of wine may be pushed out along the edge of the cork – between the cork and the neck of the bottle – allowing air to seep back in. Once the air is in contact with your wine the irreversible process of oxidation begins and your wine is ruined.

At 55ºF to 58ºF the wine will age slowly, enabling it to develop fully as intended by the winemaker. Higher temperatures will age wine more rapidly and cooler temperatures will slow down the ageing process. The damage done to your wine will be irreversible if it is stored at temperatures over 82ºF even for a month.

Perhaps the most difficult part of building a mini wine cellar closet is finding other locations to store what is already in the closet!! Do not hesitate now … remove all the present contents (move them elsewhere / give away / auction them) and start out with an empty closet!

Adequate wine racks may be purchased quite inexpensively from hardware stores, online retailers or storage specialty shops and you’ll have a simple but very effective mini wine cellar.

Wine rack designs vary in the number of bottles they can carry; price variations have less to do with efficiency and more to do with aesthetics.

Individual racks makes it easy to select bottles. If you place racks against only one wall of the closet there may still be floor or shelf space available for wines that you purchase by the case.

How To Select A Wine Gift Basket

Written by Post on Thursday, November 26th, 2009 in Food & Drink.

If you have special occasion coming up like an anniversary or birthday that requires giving a gift it is the ideal time to consider a wine gift basket. Baskets can provide elegant gifts for wine lovers and can include additional products besides wine. They can also include such gourmet treats as cheese, chocolates, fruit, nuts and wine accessories like corkscrews and bottle openers, drip stoppers, foil cutters or whatever else you decide to add to the basket. You can buy them already assembled or you can make your own for a very special gift-giving touch. All you need to know is the style of wine the receiver enjoys, or you can create a surprise basket.

Where To Buy Prepared Baskets

If you’d rather buy a wine gift basket pre-packaged, stop into your local liquor store to see if they have a selection available. Liquor stores will often sell wine gift baskets, especially at holiday times. You’ll be able to choose the wine you’d like to include in the basket and then add additional products.

Shop Online

The internet is the first place to search for customizable gift baskets. Begin by selecting one or more bottles of wine of your choice, then start adding complementary products from the wide range available. Similar products that could be included are smoked salmon and caviar, cheese crackers or other savory bites, small dairy cheeses, cheese platters and knives, nuts, whole grain mustards or regional honeys … the sky’s the limit when it comes to adding to them.

The online retailer will then arrange delivery the basket directly to the gift recipient. This is an easy option if you are searching for a corporate gift or as a thank-you to a staff member.

Create Your Own Gift Baskets

Making your own wine gift basket gives allows you to add that extra personal touch. Start with an attractive basket. A simple and inexpensive basket will do the job because you can then decorate it with fabric or colored paper. Buy your wine of choice or choose champagne for a special celebration, add some additional products depending on the preferences of the gift recipient. For example, it’s not necessary to limit your gift basket to wine or wine accessories. You could include handicrafts for someone interested in arts and crafts, or a book about wine for a wine lover who is also interested in the history or the making of wine. Select some gourmet delights to accompany the wine, pack everything into the decorated basket and wrap it all up in clear cellophane.

Personally deliver the gift basket to the recipient if you are able to so that you can share their joy when they receive it. If you’re very lucky they may share the bottle of wine with you.

You can still assemble a stunning gift basket for a non-wine drinker. For a coffee lover you could try a themed gift basket that might include coffee mugs, single origin coffee beans from different coffee-growing areas, gourmet cookies, toffees and nuts. A tea lover would probably enjoy a range of teas from different regions, together with a teapot and strainer and a fine china teacup. A coffee or tea gift basket could actually be packed onto a decorated tray rather that a basket. Again, wrap the whole package in pretty paper and add a ribbon.

There is no limit to what you can incorporate into your gift basket.
